Is Eating Organic Worth It?

So what’s the big deal about eating organic?

When I was in elementary school, the kids that had asthma, or allergies, eczema, learning disabilities, a hard time handling their moods or behavior, or on the autistic spectrum were rare. Not anymore.

Diseases like cancer, colitis, Crohn’s, were seen in adults, not children. Food allergies were not a caution. Kids did not walk around with epipens.

What’s changed? Not our genes. We evolve very slowly. So it has to be our environment. There’s been over 80,000 chemicals introduced into our environment in the last 100 years-most of them within the last 30 years.

One of the biggest and most widespread chemical we’ve been exposed to since 1996 is Glyphosate, when the first GMO crop was commercially planted.

A GMO crop is one that has been engineered to tolerate being heavily sprayed with the herbicide, glyphosate, a weed killer amongst other things.

Glyphosate, which is sprayed on the GMO crops listed below and two additional non-GMO crops (wheat and garbanzo beans to help w/harvest), has huge consequences on our health.

GMO Crops:

  • Corn
  • Canola
  • Soy
  • Beets
  • Cottonseed
  • Alfalfa

Consequences of Glyphosate:

1. Binds w/our minerals (calcium, magnesium, selenium, iron, zinc) which are all very important players in over 800 mechanisms in our bodies.

Magnesium calms, is the backbone of progesterone, reduces blood pressure, important in autoimmune disease. Selenium is needed for thyroid hormone and immune health, Zinc for immunity and skin health.

Glyphosate also binds with minerals in the soil making them unavailable in plants and ultimately to the animals who eat the plants. Our soil has become very deplete.

 2. It’s patented as an antibiotic, altering our gut microbiome, causing IBS, leaky gut, food allergies, eczema, asthma, Crohn’s, Colitis, autoimmune disease-causing a ton of inflammation.

Our digestive tract is the seat of our health.

3. It disrupts our ability to make two very important classes of Amino Acids (AA).

   a. Amino Acids needed to make thyroid hormone and the neurotransmitter dopamine-think of temper, anxiety, learning, ADHD.

   b. Sulfur Amino Acids necessary for detoxification

Please think about eating organic whenever you can. At the very least, bring only organic into your home where you have some control. It’s important!
