Hi Ladies!
Did you know that as estrogen declines during menopause, it can quietly drag down your levels of choline—a nutrient your body really needs?
Choline plays a crucial role in two major organs that tend to take a hit during midlife:
✔️ Your brain
✔️ Your digestion
Let’s break it down:
- Brain Fog, Mood Swings, and Memory Slips?
Choline is essential for producing acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter that helps with memory, focus, and overall brain function.
Low estrogen = lower choline synthesis = foggy brain and those “Why did I walk into this room?” moments. - Bloated, Sluggish, or Constipated?
Choline helps your liver make bile, which is key for digesting fats and absorbing fat-soluble vitamins (like A, D, E & K). Without enough bile, digestion slows down, bloating creeps in, along with constipation and your gut starts to grumble.
So this is something to pay attention to during menopause. And some of us may be more vulnerable if we have a certain gene called PEMT. I have this gene which explained my increased digestive problems, constipation and painful cracked heels (think fat absorption and fat soluble vitamins) as I was moving into menopause. No fun at all!!!
And BTW, these symptoms can look like a thyroid problem. That’s why we need to test AND have a conversation-both!
What Can You Do?
✅ Add more choline-rich foods like pasture-raised eggs, liver, salmon, and broccoli (more animal protein)
✅ Consider a choline supplement (love Bile Nutrients)
✅ Support bile production with bitters, movement, and hydration
✅ And of course, work with someone who gets what your body is going through 😉
If you’ve been feeling more forgetful and/or more bloated lately, it may not be “just menopause.” It might be the need for more choline.
