Testosterone is what makes a man a man. And when it begins to wane, a man will start to lose his energy, desire for sex, ability to have sex, overall drive, and sense of wellbeing. Life just doesn’t feel the same to him.
So what’s the best thing to do when that starts to happen? Reach for testosterone, of course! Right? How many of your buddies have told you that once they started taking testosterone, they felt great again? Felt like they were 20 and 30 years old again?
While this may very well be true, there’s a problem with that.
There’s a reason a man has low testosterone and while taking testosterone will make him feel better, it does not take care of the underlying problem(s). So, if you just go into an anti-aging clinic, a pellet clinic or order testosterone online, you’re doing yourself a huge disservice. It’s a temporary fix and you are shutting down the opportunity to figure out what’s going on, which will show up in another way in the next 5-10 years.
Remember, testosterone levels are a big part of your health report card.
So, before you or your doctor reaches for testosterone you need a complete male hormone panel. Only testing testosterone levels is doing yourself a great disservice.
This is what a complete male hormone panel looks like:
- Total and Free Testosterone
- Estradiol-men make estrogen from testosterone
- LH-stimulates the testes to make testosterone
- SHBG-if elevated may bind with testosterone
- DHEA-back bone of testosterone
- Prolactin (if high could mean there’s a tumor in pituitary) which will lower Testosterone.
- Thyroid panel-not just TSH but at least Free T4 and Free T3
- Fasting Insulin-if high will lay down more belly fat = less testosterone
