The Lowdown on PCOS

PCOS can be a bit confusing. The name, polycystic ovarian syndrome indicates that this condition centers around having cysts on your ovaries but this is a misnomer.

PCOS is actually a bit of a subjective diagnosis based on a collection of symptoms.

  1. Excess hair on face and body (hirsutism)
  2. Loss of head hair
  3. Acne-especially on the chin
  4. Irregular periods
  5. Elevated androgens (testosterone, DHEAs)
  6. Elevated Insulin
  7. Infertility
  8. Difficulty losing weight

You don’t have to have all of these symptoms to have PCOS. So it’s best to have a healthcare professional to determine if, in fact, that’s what’s going on for you and then help guide you through the steps to reverse this very treatable condition.

Birth Control Pills

The Pill is often prescribed to treat PCOS but that just masks the problem and does nothing to get the root cause to actually heal and can also cause other problems and deficiencies. AND the reasons you had the PCOS symptoms in the first place do not go away. They are still there when you decide to come off the Pill.

To heal PCOS from the root cause, first, it needs to be determined what type of PCOS you have. Either a functional medicine practitioner or a naturopathic doctor should be able to make that determination with the proper testing and pairing that with your symptoms.
